Due to the frequency of poaching magical creatures for their blood, both Dragon Sickness and Hunter's Remorse are known as legends/word of mouth myths, but many people believe the stories are just stories meant to keep people from hunting two of the rarest magical creatures (one of which is now believed to be extinct with the mass-hunting and death of all dragons and dragonborn).

Because of how rare dragons and unicorns were during the lives of the characters pre-war and how much rarer they are now knowledge would definitely have been considered more of a cautionary tale than taken as fact.

As to Dragon Sickness, due to the spilling of dragon's blood being largely limited to private ceremonies meant to create Dragonborn, attempts were actively made to discredit the belief that drinking or being touched by dragon blood would cause curses, and the stories were warped to be that intentionally spilling dragon blood was the cause of such curses while dragonborn were said to be 'honored' with the touch of their magic.

In truth, both the dragonborn who drank dragon's blood and those whose skin was touched by dragon's blood were cursed by the potency of the powerful old magic contained in a dragon's veins. The older a dragon was, the more violent the side effects could be. This is why the dragonborn had to periodically and secretly be given more dragon's blood to keep their blood from boiling in their veins or to keep them from being driven mad by the magic they now could access. Political person's of import and priests of the dragons made sure to only express how beneficial this union of dragon and person could be, and what a great honor it was to be chosen while leaving out the less savory details of the consequences involved for those who participated in the ritual.
